Thoughts to Ponder

"There are no mistakes, only feedback."

"When we choose our response to a circumstance, we powerfully affect our circumstance."

"Changing my circumstances starts within me and I can only start from where I am right now."

"Never give up on a dream because of the time it takes to complete...the time will pass anyway."

DOn't quIT...DO IT

Can I do this?  This seems to be a question almost every court reporting student asks, either before or several months after starting court reporting school.  Within the words don't and quit is a subliminal message of DO IT!  Within every negative or adverse situation there is always an equal or greater benefit, even though it may seem hidden at the time of your adversity.

I know your struggle as a student.  I have been there and also had the opportunity to experience the struggle of a court reporting instructor.  The first thing I noticed as a student and an instructor is that this training is different from any college or other school training.  This was especially true when I completed my beginning Theory class and progressed into the speedbuilding program.  I felt like I had fallen into a "black hole."  I knew my theory and how to write on the machine, why couldn't I seem to pass dictation tests?  I felt really frustrated.  I knew there had to be a better way to get through this program.  From my own personal experience I realized that there was something missing.  The missing link I discovered was the "Mental Preparation."

Can you relate to any of these statements:

I can't pass tests.

I'm so stressed.

I know I should practice, but I don't.

This training is difficult.

I get nervous when I take tests.

If you related to any of these statements you are not alone.  These statements do not have anything to do with your skill or your ability.  They have to do with your mental self-talk and limiting beliefs that sabatoge your success.  Those stressed feelings and nervous feelings are not new, however, the experience that is triggering those emotions may be new.

When you get nervous before or during a test it is not about passing or failing the test, it is about what passing or failing the test means to you.  It is all the mental chatter that goes on your mind, it is your "story" that you have probably played in your mind many times.

That chatter may sound like this:

"This is the qualifing test for the next speed, I have to get to the next level or I am never going to get out of school."

"I've been stuck at this level so long, maybe I really can't do this."

"I owe so much to financial aid, if I don't pass this test and graduate, how will I ever pay all that back."

"My parents, my husband, my family... noboby understands why it is taking me so long to pass this speed level."

"I passed the first two tests months ago, I have to pass this one."

That chatter goes on and on and before you know it you are so nervous you cannot pass the test.  Then you are stressed and angry and the vicious self-defeating mental self-talk gets stronger.  EFT can help you get relief from the negative chatter that is keeping you from succeeding.

Your training is very similar to an Olympic athlete's training, you are going for the "Gold" and have to be almost perfect.  There is very little room for error, yet you have to make mistakes over and over to get your skill to that level of perfection.  An Olympic athlete has to do a lot of mental preparation and visualization in addition to honing their skill level.

How much mental preparation are you doing?
